Could this be used on a usb on another box on the same network? IE installed on 500hd with no usb ports accessing a GB quad?
Doubt it buddy... each box has its own configurations..
But maybe somebody has managed somehow...

There is someway to mount net drive but i do not know the details search and tell us if you succeed
I think it would be feasible on a Dreambox. I have not tried.
If I were to make one, I would share a USB on the box where it is mounted and mount it as a network drive on the client box.
It might be worth a try if you have the options of your box
