"Folks on this side of the pond will unfortunately miss out on this one, but our friends in the UK will soon be able to get their hands on Elgato's new EyeTV Netstream Sat box and make everyone else a bit envious. It will not only let you stream Freesat satellite TV to any computer on your home network, but straight to your iPad as well with Elgato's EyeTV app (though not your iPhone or iPod touch, it seems). That sort of streaming has been possible before but, as Pocket-lint notes, you previously had to keep your computer on to stream satellite video to your iOS device. Look for the device to start shipping on November 22nd for £189.95 (or about $300), while the EyeTV app will set you back an extra £2.99."

According to Macstories, an inside source at AT&T has said the release date and time for iTunes 10.1 and OSX 10.6.5 will be tomorrow at 10AM PST. Apple generally releases iTunes a couple days before the subsequent release of iOS which puts the release of iOS 4.2 slated for Friday. This is further supported by a story from 9to5mac that Apple plans to push an iPhone carrier update on Nov. 12th. Keep your eyes peeled tomorrow as it will be the start to an exciting week of updates

Apple has been sent a formal notification of copyright infringement regarding the way VLC for iOS is distributed in the App Store.

R?mi Denis-Courmont, one of the primary developers of VLC, explained to MacStories that Apple?s iTunes Terms and Conditions don't allow users to install both free and paid apps on more than 5 devices. This goes against the original GNU license VLC's code is based on.

"In any case, while the rules for distribution of open-source or "free" (as in speech) software are extremely relaxed, they do exist and have to be abode by. VLC and open-source software in general would not have reached their current quality and success if it had not been for their license. Therefore, blatant license violation cannot be tolerated at any rate. Concerned users are advised to look for application on more open mobile platforms for the time being."

You can download VLC Media Player from the App Store for free.

A security loophole in iOS 4.1 (as well as the 4.2 beta, apparently) allows unauthorized access to the iPhone?s contacts, phone functionality, emails and MMS. *Spotted by MacRumors forum members, the exploit is straightforward: from the iPhone 4 lockscreen, hit ?Emergency Call?, type in a random number and initiate the call, and then press the sleep key as soon as the end-call button appears on-screen. *That automatically takes you to the handset?s contact list.

From that list, it?s possible to browse all the contacts, as well as share their details via email or MMS (though not access the general inbox of either). *From that email, you can also browse the photo gallery (as if choosing an attachment).

Apple is yet to comment on the exploit, but we imagine their technical team will be hard at work coming up with a fix for it. *Still, until that?s released, we?d recommend taking some care with where you leave your iPhone, even if you?ve got the lock enabled.

It's an eye-opening headline for certain, and one that's making the rounds throughout various media today, as Apple is believed to be considering a strategic acquisition of Sony. For now, we must responsibly classify this one as a rumor until more concrete evidence surfaces. But with better than $50 billion in the bank, Apple can certainly afford the logical buy. But just because Apple can... doesn't mean that it will.

When rumors of the potential buyout first leaked, the trading volume of Sony exploded and escalated close to 3% at one point. And while many analysts have dismissed the rumor-talk, Sony and Apple aren't talking - a situation that could speak volumes.

Barron's was among the first to note that Apple may soon scoop up the consumer electronics giant. The speculation, however, also included talk of potential acquisitions for Adobe and Disney. Sony, however, remains the most likely contender for an Apple buyout, especially given the recent comments of former Apple CEO John Sculley to Bloomberg, suggesting that Steve Jobs is head-over-heels enamored with Sony.

During Apple's most recent earnings call, Jobs uncharacteristically jumped on the line to offer comment on the runaway growth and earnings of his company. It was at that time that Jobs made clear his intention of using Apple's massive cash reserves to make big moves within the tech world. And an acquisition of Sony would fit that description perfectly.
