Try first just have both cables of the box going to the same lnb set up simple and the satellite your pointing at set on both tuners and preferred tuner to auto , if that works it will iron out if it is an actual recording issue or a mix up with the wires and switches or a faulty switch

The solo 2 only takes a 2.5 drive and a 1tb or 500gb both would be ok you wont hear your box much at all they are very quiet and a cool running box considering the spec and size of the box its surprising

Did you set up port forwarding on your router , if not you will need to do this

Are you not able to do this with the remote control , in the time setting just make sure you save them before you exit

what are you planning on doing with the box that you feel the need for gigabit speeds , even usb2 in most cases you never see top speeds the average of 45mbps on storage devices , including external hard drives , 10/100 is sufficient for all streaming the boxes are capable of , just might take a little time if you want to fill the drive with video files if you want to use it as a media player

I would go with homeplugs if i was you you can get them cheap if you look around
