No your thinking is too old school, symlinks are a much better proposal.
This could be done inside the images, same as they've all mostly coded multiboot options inside.
I think neoboot have this option, when you start new image setup it will ask you if you want to copy settings, channels, tuners... etc from flash to new image, automatically, if you select yes, it will done
You must mount all slots in fstab to each image.

Regarding the external slots, I don't know if you created the 18 slots by yourself or from a script.
I don't know the layout of the slots (which partition of the sd-card each slot corresponds to).

Thanks giorbak , finally and for first time I have the ability to make proper mounting, you were correct in your steps but it was not clear for me,
