Hi shadows, a quick hello in Introductions is required..
The HDD probably isn`t mounted properly, you don`t say which image you are using, if its BlackHole try below..
In device manager press Red button (mountpoints) highlight your hdd and go sideways on remote untill media/hdd and press Red button again to save.
-
sorry yes blackhole... thats the problem i go into device manager and i get the green screen (it takes me about 5 attempts by switching off at the plug to get into it) when in it a do the mount for usb and hdd everything is ok but when the box is switch off it unmounts. that is why am trying to initailize the hdd with the box thank you
-
Give this a try buddy, Vu+ solo ? usb hdd installation..
-
no luck
unable to complete filesystem check
error please reboot -
Have you tried formatting the HDD in windows to FAT32 then try to initialize again ?
-
since i formatted it in wizzard as ext 3 its not showing in windows
-
Maybe this will help, How To: Fix Hard Drive not detected in Device Manager with Telnet Commands VU+..
-
so i need to make partions i can do this in format wizzard but how many partions should i make and what size partion, these are the questions asked when i format it and this is when things go over my head thank you
-
Make one partition for the whole size of the HDD..
-
Try, FTP var,etc right click fstab & edit, remove # save & exit & reboot box, This worked for me!!
-
execution progress
partitioning /dev/sdc
/bin/sh:/temp/sfdisk: permission denied
execution fisnish
when i back up from this it starts formating but its the permission denied i think is causing the problem.. iv just formated it to fat 32 and that dont work either thank you -
Post the contents of etc/fstab file so we can see if there is any mountpoints in there..
-
I htink its something gto to do with this :
Quotepartitioning /dev/sdc
it should read /dev/sda1¿did you try the method I wrote in post # 2 ?? http://linuxsat-support.com/vu…r-telnet-commands-vu.html
-
i think iv sorted it i reformated the harddrive to fat 32 on the pc using easeUS then i reflashed my vu box formated the harddrive again in format wizzard ext3 then this allowed me to initailize it dont know where the problem lie but i now can get into device manager without green screen thanks for all replies

I had this same problem and using blackhole just could not get it to work properly. One of the things is when mounting the HDD as it's an external you need to mount it as USB and not HDD.
I switched to vix in the end and I've had no issues since.
Also make sure when you set up the HDD you create a swap file. In vix there is a swap manager. Have a look at other posts that I've made and you'll see I've had the same issues. Hope this helps.

if if set it to usb what do i set my usb stick in the back as...
how do i swap file thank you -
you can maintain the usb penstick as it is,,,
for swap manager in BH image you can either go blue-blue and you will see it there ,set it to 256 max..
or through TS panel in tools to do the same..
To be honest I have only ever had such probs as you describe when I changed to other images and didnt realise that most other images automatically recognise it..
in BH , I´ve never had any probs... so I would suggest to make a full backup copy of your image, config files and reflash the box ,
as it sounds like somewhere along the lines the image became corrupt...
if you are still not happy with the result then do as suggested, try another image...
