  • Just trying to setup dish after it was moved when upvc guttering and facia installed on back of house:

    my settings :
    Address:
    Latitude:
    Longitude:

    Satellite: 13E EUTELSAT 3C | EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13B | EUTELSAT HOT BIRD 13C
    Elevation: 29.0°
    Azimuth (true): 159.2°
    Azimuth (magn.): 161.4°

Setup the dark motor at 51 on the motor bracket:

The elevation angle the is 29 the notch on the bracket is on the left hand site as looking from behind the pole.

My Question which side do i set the angle on the dish right or left as from behind the pole:

As i have tried the strongest tp for a few sats no signal

Cannot go to thor as the dish will facia board

Not using USALS not sure if pole is bang on .

Hard when you are up a ladder and in agony with your back.

Not any installers near me i phoned a few but all of them only do sky i am wiling o pay to put it right.

    Using a vu solo2

  • Has the scew on the LNB been moved this can make a difference (the scew is the angle the LNB is set at) have you a meter --if you live in a street with other dishes look at the angle these are set to --the angle on the bracket at the back of dish should be marked in degrees for instance 30 or 40 and so on--below is from labgear tut (not my work)

  • Set the elevation at 29.0 for my area bridgend south wales

I think that is for a fixed dish, for a motor it would be more like 23. On my motor bracket, on one side it is for elevation and the other side are markings for latitude.

At the top of this page, under quick links is dishpointer. On there set your location and look at the bottom of the list for motor settings. Also probably best to first test with a satellite as close to due south as possible for your location - so maybe try 4W.

Also, sometimes it is useful to zoom in and find a landmark on the map to point at for due south. And if you have a mobil or tablet, you can use an app to check the signal without having to climb up and down all the time...

  • Latitude is set to 51 on my dark motor which is right for my area.

Tried elevation from 21-27 still no signal at all on the postioner when moving from sat to sat.

Sorry it did happen on one hotbird 60% locked and dropped to nothing and zero ever since.

  • Sorry, I looked up your motor and it uses 35 degrees and not 30. So the offset for 51 = 7.4 -> which means a dish angle of 27.6. (35 - 7.4 = 27.6)

Again, I would try to get a signal on something as close to due south as possible before trying other sats...

  • Referring back to my other post was the LNB altered in any way when you had your alterations done and remember a LNB can go down at any time although usually you would loose just one polarity H or V not both check also your cable make sure you have not got water ingress if you cannot line up your dish to true south as has been said above you will need to check each sat is correct aligned with a meter

  • Tried this meter2d3949b7f877dff98.jpg

Found a signal on hot bird wth postioner setup when i took it off no signal on info bar at all.

Checked my pole with level seems ok tried usals nothing at all

Lat on my dark motor is 51 for my area and elevation is 27.5 set it to 28.

I am no expert but moving/ searching east or west surely it should pick some sort of signal on strong sats if dish is slightly out when moving dish but nothing

Checked connections on Vusolo2 box dark motor and Lnb all ok

  • you can test the box with the meter in place, signal will just be a tiny bit less. If your motor is not facing due south, all sats will be untuneable. Make sur motor is due south, us usals to select 4W (motor should barely move) an you should pick up something with signal meter. Adjust for strongest signal (loudest tone) then try tu tune box to some transponder on 4w (look at lyngsat.com for hints)

  • On your solo2 have you entered everything correct --have you tried another reciever if you have one as you say LNB is ok it rules out LNB failure if your getting picture on other reciever --Normally you would set your motor dish to nearest to true south but in your case you are going to have to set each sat up manually and hope it tracks the ones left on your arc --the only thing im thinking is the skew of the LNB has altered during your alterations have you tried to gently move it also try on a FTA channel that normally has a good signal
The main difficulty is you cannot use your referrance sat nearest to true south -i once setup my motor dish and was not able to to do this either but im trying to remember it may have been in the days of 36v motors which required you to set each sat manually with meter anyway if you lived in my locality i would lend you a good meter but i hope you get it sorted

  • Sorry, I looked at your location and 4w may not be strong enough, but 5w should give you a good signal. The reason to test closest to due south is that as the motor turns, any errors in alignment get more exaggerated the further from due south you go. Because as it turns, it also changes the elevation so you not only end up with east-west misalignment, you also have elevation problems.

  • Found hotbird after tweaking dish and lnb got 75% on info bar scanned and got 2000 channels and stored position on my vusolo2.

Checked signal on few Tps signal was 85-95%.

Tried to find 19.2 no signal.

Went into stored sat on vu box hot bird to move it back dish would not move.

Went into postioner setup to move to hotbird moved west and found sat stored and signal was fine

Mips bases boxes are not the best at signal finding....
I have seen it on a load of boxes. One minute the sat finder has signal the next it hasn't. Load up a full motorised channel list either manually or use the isetting plugin. Then at least you have a channel list to work from.
As you have already been told it's best to set up as close to due south as possible. So get a good signal on some 0.8w channels. Then go to 30w and check /adust for signal. Then go to 42e and again check and adjust. Once you have good signal strength on all 3 if those sats the dish should be aligned and you should then get good signal on all sats.
Bear in mind the adjustments are only tiny for fine tuning.

  • I agree with jensen above apart from 0.8 thor been a possible referance sat or nearest to true south for you as it depends on your location in the British Isles some locations are 5 west nearest to true south i think this applies to south Ireland and parts of Wales --dont mean to correct you jensen mate as what you say is absolutely spot on

The obvious issue lies with rasp not been able to first attain true south with his dish and i once had this issue many years ago on the old 36v systems then i shortened my limits (where my dish could travel) and i set each and every sat individually it worked fine for 42e-7e but this was as i say on a old gregorian dish which if any of you can remember was probably the best ever dish for signal anyway having a secondary reflector lol so my setting up errors were made up for with the gain of the dish

  • Before this setup i had a old lenson heath 1 mtr dish with 36v echostar ad36000 wiith a longer pole could get 30w no priblem

Changed the echostar for a vbox and spiderbox worked great the tuner on the spider is hell of a lot better than the vusolo2.

Changed the dish for a triax installed myself worked ok for a while until high winds.

Her indoors said get somebody to do it for you ok the bloke said i would not be able to get 1.0w because the dish would hit the roof.

On checking it out myself the elevation on the dish was wrong and set it 51 myself.

On the question of true south should the motor pole and dish bracket level with each other .

I have not moved it from hot bird but on looking at hit the sat is west of true south.

Thanks for all the advice guys

  • Hotbird is 13º EAST of south so when you are looking at front of dish it will be on your right side of south alignment..
    another thing ,,
in your lat / long remember that if long is for example -3.xxxx then in your tuner USALS positioner it should say 003.XXX WEST
LATITUDE 050.XXX then you set it 050.XXX NORTH

  • TRUE SOUTH is exactly as cazuela says magnetic south is what you find using a compass it points to the magnetic south of the earth there is i believe only about 2 degrees difference anyway but cazuela is spot on for every sat that says for instance thor says 0.8degrees west it is 0.8degrees west of south and the same the other way 7e is 7 degrees east of south just as cazuela explained

By the way i too used to have a Echostar mine was the 3000IP i still have it somewhere they were great boxes for finding sats as you could see where you were driving using the software --i honestly wish you lived in my locality i would lend you a good meter or set it for you

Just to add il add a pdf but it could be too technical for the things we do but it slightly explains the differences between true south and magnetic south

  • THE FUGITIVE:

    Thanks for the pdf.

    LAT: 51.076 NORTH

    LON:0.375 WEST.

What i meant was looking from behind the dish from the pole side is due south when the dish motor and pole are all in line .

As hotbird is west of the level point.

Will have a go again on Monday as will have to help her indoors tomorrow.

I truly appreciate all the help you have given my guys

  • Those coordinates do not look right for South Wales, they are near London...

With the motor reset on zero (reset button on motor or goto 0 from receiver), the pole, motor pole and dish should be in a straight line pointing due south - with the dish perfectly perpendicular (parallel to east-west)
