Try wiping user data- it will wipe all your addons, but it's usually the addons that cause issues.
I'd wipe user data then install the tvaddons hub wizard:
spark7162 is for the Alien2 (twin & triple tuner)
spark7111 is for the Alien (SHD8900 and Alien Mini)
You can FTP the icons over- username is root and password is root and the file path is:
/mnt/shell/emulated/0/spark2/picon
Sounds like it could be an issue with the cache or temp files- what else do you have running?
Try leaving it on over night but stop oscam- this can create a lot temp/log files if mis-configured
Can you post the log files?
use the updater (menu->system->updater) this will get you on to the latest firmware.
what error is it giving when you try to install oscam?
If you want to build/compile the images that's actually quite easy- the easiest is probably from the oe-alliance git:
https://github.com/oe-alliance/build-enviroment
It has to be run in Linux- Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is recommended (I use Linux Mint 17). Getting all the dependencies is probably the hardest part:
apt-get install -y autoconf automake bison bzip2 cvs diffstat flex g++ gawk gcc gettext git-core gzip help2man ncurses-bin ncurses-dev libc6-dev libtool make texinfo patch perl pkg-config subversion tar texi2html wget zlib1g-dev chrpath libxml2-utils xsltproc libglib2.0-dev python-setuptools zip info coreutils diffstat chrpath libproc-processtable-perl libperl4-corelibs-perl sshpass default-jre default-jre-headless java-common libserf-dev
Should take care of most- but probably not all dependencies.
Download this firmware- it has the plugins built in:
Spiel:
http://www.sat-support.tv/getfile.php?a=1147
Spiel Mini:
http://www.sat-support.tv/getfile.php?a=1145
Or you can go for the Lavatronics one which is the same but has the UK 28.2e channel list in aswell.
Try:
Portsmouth (Cosham)NTL 41042 666.750
Portsmouth (Solent)NTL ex C&W 41042 562.750
also some areas use qam64 or qam256
Did you try pressing the menu button / buttons on the remote?
you could try openatv 5 from here:
it has vpn support built in for ipsec and pptp- I've been using it with VyprVPN
On the A3 if you make sure you're using the latest oscam (24-10-2014) version then it works without glitching- and it's also one of the best receivers for compatibility with Android apps and stability. I rate the A3 as the best Android box I've used so far
I find starting Navi-X stops tv playback- doesn't seem to make too much difference to cpu load tho'
the database converter is built in to the firmware- it can be found in the 'Misc Settings', there's the option to import either Spark or E2 database, and only takes a few seconds. I'm using oscam from the 24-10-14.
You can import an Enigma2 channel list directly in to the A3- it has a working database transformer. I use Catseye 28.2e list- all works perfect.
I've only tried the VPN through PPTP to a commercial server (Vypr) so I've not actually tried the OpenVPN app
There's plenty of video tutorials on youtube relating to the Alien2- there's some here that may help:
as long as you're using the latest oscam you shouldn't have any issues- mine's running fine on 28.2e
there's a video tutorial here on how to set it up here:
I'm not in to the politics behind it or the usual scene drama's- I just want software that works, and from what I've experienced with the VIX4 image it does seem to work.
Is there anything specifically you've found not to work on it? (interested because I've put a few family/friends on this image- and I can't be doing with phone calls if there are any problems)
if uboot (the bootloader) has become corrupt then the only way to recover it would be through JTAG (AFAIK).
I'd contact who you bought it off if it's still under warranty
