I would agree that it's best for you to try all images & then make your choice, my personal choice is always Black Hole
-
just another thing to try, I know of someone with a similar problem with a duo. I recommended the usual 'fixes' same as those mentioned, he was getting as far as 'starting' on display but that was it, he tried flashing BH 1.7.2 amd the box revived. Why I don't know, the images use less memory than the newer 2.x.x versions.
But if it's going back under stairs it might be worth a try -
why do you not try flashing the image with vu-util & rs232 lead?
-
sometimes these boxes are picky with usb sticks, try a smaller stick,4gb, as mentioned earlier you always have rs232 option
-
the op is correct, I always use BH, always from the original forum, currently using the version he's trying to flash, & inside the duo folder there are 3 files
-
been using it for a few weeks, d/l from home site and they recommend you set up swap, either way you still have to mount usb, and 4 or 5 clicks sets it up , I'd say the zram compression function is what you mean, explained here, taken from another forum
Solo and Duo only:
The 1920x1080 framebuffer support has required extra Ram usage. For this reason the old Solo and Duo models do not have enough free ram to run the curent images with these new features.
In Black Hole 2.1.4 we have included ram compression (zram) that increases performance by avoiding paging to disk and using a compressed block device in RAM instead, inside which the paging takes place until it is necessary to use the swap space on a hard drive or usb stick. Since using ZRAM is an alternative way to provide swapping on RAM, zram allows Linux to make more use of RAM when swapping/paging is required. -
download a new copy of BH 2.1.4 try again, remember a swap file is recommended to use with this image when you get it working, it night be no harm to factory reset box before flash, you could also try flash via rs232 method
-
this may be of help google Brian Hornsby, he developed an app for openvpn, config details are on his blog, might help you along mate
-
sometimes the box can boot on a dead channel and seem unresponsive
try pressing the menu button,if still no response you can use suggested rs 232 method -
you can also try sourcing an NFI version of your image and flash the box using vu- util & an rs232 lead
-
you could try connecting to box via openwebif and you can get into menu that way
-
2 versions of BH for duo released past few weeks 2.1.3 v2 & 2.1.4, they recommend you set up swap file as newer images use a lot of ram, I'm using bh 2.1.3 v2
and at times ram usage is quite high, might account for your hdmi problems, try factory resetting box and re flashing then set up a swap file , it might help -
mckee is right, coolmans is an independent add on all changes or modifications are made via the addon not the image
-
it's impossible to load a firmware as a channel list on ***boxes, chan lists are flashed via misc files whereas firmware is 1st option upgrade image. neither will mix
A corrupt chan list can brick a box, happened many times on release of f5 a few years back. google for your ***box recovery tool, it will contain a read me
try to avoid using usb to serial as it makes it harder to connect, ypu will need a bit of patience connecting but bear with it. if you get fail to read raw file message
when connecting you may need to replace the abs firmware file with another firmware -
Black hole & get your cam from this forum you'll be good
-
another option you could try, using BlackHole set up Teleportation function, I have a swap file and teleportation set up on 2 genuine vu boxes, The Ram is nearly always round 90% anyway, the box will only transfer to the swap file when it needs to, whereas using flash expansion it starts to transfer on boot..Teleportation is easy to set up,within the image, an alternate image is created, in your alternate image you can add plug ins they're stored on a usb, these additions will only exist in the alternate universe, you can jump back to your original image at any time, just an alternative for you

This is kind of irrelevant to this discussion but in reply to SWEENEY's comment
Out of 420 or so Encrypted SIDs on the Sly Platform, only 90 are broadcasting in HD. (These numbers include variants of the same Channel)
Out of the 330 SIDs broadcasting in SD minus (37 Box Office & 28 Sports Active) = 265, there are 201 unique Channels.
Out of those 201 Unique Channels There are 140 that have no HD versions
Of those 140, 47 are +1 channels that could be switched to HD overnight (Assuming enough Bandwidth on Astra 28.2)
That leaves 93 Encrypted Channels that have no HD Alternative..That looks like years of work to my untrained eye.. I cant see Sly Broadcasting HD only in the next 5 years..
well said thatfellow, there are channels on the *** platform that while they share the same encryption its administered seperately from s**
channels like btsport hd 1+ 2 & boxnation hd, assuming that s** will be all hd in short time doesn't make sense, -
re install the channel list then reboot the box, should be fine then, when you ad list press info button to see if it was installed
-
how does anyone know the SD channels will stay for a long time?
the most honest answer I can give is no one really knows, read this thread & the countless others
on forums, they consist of personal opinion & conjecture, and in some cases wild speculation. The realities we know
HD Channels are being made unavailable, regarding SD, or Sly's future plans? only they know for sure,
just trying to be logical about the situation.
