Satellite xml confusion

    I have just put a image on my dreambox 800hd and I am having a nightmare with some channels not being found. So I thought I would wipe it clean and start from scratch


    I have made a smaller xml file using notepad ++ and put to one side for ftping to the box.

    I did notice there is a satellite xml file in etc/tuxbox. As if the file hasn't been deleted from the last image. So my question is when you put a new image into your machine, should it come with a satellte xml file or for some reason does it stay in from last time, If so how do I completely remove it?

    I see my smaller file in there now but I have weird arrows on the folders and when I click on them show another size file.

    Satellites.xml comes with every installation of a new image. In any case, you need a new one because there are a lot of channel parameter changes on various satellites. I noticed that you have satellite.xml in the etc folder, not in etc / tuxbox. It is best to download the latest one from the forum and copy it to the appropriate folder. After copying, restart dreambox.

    The XML file is used to validate positions and names for setting up/configuring the tuner. When using the scanning function in Enigma 2, the frequencies listed in the XML file are probed. Also used for signal finder. Blind scanning, manual/user entry scanning does not use it. Nor do plugins like ABM.


    System file is in /etc/tuxbox/

    User file (takes priority) is in /etc/enigma2


    Once scanned, the entries are saved in lamedb file. The values in lamedb are what are used for tuning into the transponder.


    If you have a reception or hardware issue, the software/files won't make a difference. Examples: Misaligned dish, LNB fault, power supply issue, capacitors on tuner dying out.

    Thanks for the great explanation. So the lamedb would be the file which should be tweaked to remove some old transponders ? It seems complicated but simple enough when you know what your doing .

    Thanks, I have downloaded the file but I have seen one of frequencies which seems to be incorrect. I Am testing right now.

    I would be interested in knowing what frequency you think is incorrect. The file is updated every Saturday. We can ask for an ad-hoc fetch if required.


    Unless you know what you are doing, I wouldn't be editing lamedb file. If you do do it, make sure you stop enigma2 with an "init 4" command first as it is kept in RAM and written back on graceful restart/shutdown.


    One way to remove dead entries is to enable "Clear before scanning" when you scan. However, the transponder must be listed in the XML file.

    I did not see satellites.xml in etc/enigma2. Only in /etc/tuxbox.

    Becuase of an unexplained so-far freeze after multiple blindscans in a row of the right RCU button not allowing cycling the satellite list.
    I am using a trimmed file also. When it happens the only way to get it working again is to reboot.
    And it has happened on every image I've tried. Currently using ViX 6.6.
    Cycling through every single satellite using the left RCU button and hoping you don't go past the intended one by one click is a pain.
    It was revealed recently that the pvr button will open a satellite selection screen just like Manual Scan will by using the OK button.
    Yayy image makers. Get it together. There is a green button in the blindscan screen to initiate it. So why does the OK button do it also?

    My list is trimmed down to 127W to 40.5W. And using satellites.xml org. I see that orbital assignments in the header for each satellite sometimes are different.

    Right now I am on 125W. In Signal Finder the satellite is the same. Below SNR & AGC I see Orb Pos: 131W ONID 2 TSID 101
    Not a clue where that comes from. A hint that the orbital position may be coming from the satellite header. The rest?

    Also. After a blindscan. I add new found transponders to the .xml
    It makes future channel searches faster. Such as hunting wild feeds using Signal Finder. I rarely remove suspected dead transponders. Because who knows?
    They may have a game or event and turn them back on for it.
    And in a new install of an image. Where the stock .xml may not have all of the trasnponders included. Well, there you go.
    And who knows where satellites.xml org gets their updated info. User input like Lyngsat?

    I use E-channelizer. At times and not knowing why. A read from my lamedb folder on this pc will overwrite my trimmed .xml
    Even after I manually copy it to the directory on the pc. Usually it "sticks" though.

    Satellites.xml has to be formatted perfectly. Or you will lose your channels and NIMS section in etc/enigma2/settings.
    So it might be a good idea if you back that up. In a compatible new image install. Copying the NIMS section after configuring a few satellites in Tuner Setup can save a lot of time. In a new image install I rarely, if ever, answer yes to the do I want to restore previous settings prompt.

    So this is what I found . The frequency on king of sat actually all but matches up to the satellite xml channel.

    When I use this frequency my picture fades in and out. Today of all days it was sunny so it was pretty good (which is a shame because I wanted to take a screenshot of the blocky picture.)


    By luck I put the wrong polarisation into my xml file so instead of horizontal I put in vertical.

    I presumed the xml file was incorrect because it was different to my working file.

    1st file is the downloaded file and the second is my own file.


    So not sure what's going on at the mo. I seem to find the bbc channels and watch them but they seem to disappear after a reboot or another scan.

    I am still tinkering here.

    Thanks man. I don't have the satellite xml file in the etc/enigma2 folder. Any idea how to put it in there?

    In putty init 4 (linux in general) puts the box in standby. init 3 brings it out of standby.
    Many files that you might edit will not 'stick' if the receiver is not given the init 4 command.

    Use a channel editor. E-Channelizer works, Deramboxedit works. Stay out of the lamedb. Let the editor handle it.


    Depending on the lnbf you use. Expect a few MHz and sr drift. The receiver will handle it okay.
    If you do have fringe signal strength. Trust the blindscan frequencies, etc.
    After you do edit the satellite.xml. Just save it. Bite the bullet and deep standby and then reboot the box from a cold boot.
    From putty. When the receiver is in init 4 and you're finished with edits. Type reboot and hit enter.

    Look at the header on satellites.xml org files. You will see when they were last updated.

    If it is in /etc/enigma2, it precludes /etc/tuxbox. And will not be overwritten if an update is performed.
    Any updates "may" install the most recent updated file from satelite-xml.org.


    It's a good idea if you use an editor such as notepad++ to make sure all formatting characters are shown.
    The file is sensitive to tabs. Extra spaces after or before cr/lf.
    Of course it's a good idea to make and keep a backup of your file off of the receiver and ftp it out/in.

    what are these "DATA", can i delete them as i make for "RADIO" ?

    Data is just that. Satellite IP data. Lotto feeds, POS debit card machines. TBS cards, receivers such as the Novra line are capable of extracting data for further processing. For European region folks. A search for Eumetcast and the proper catch phrases will tell a bit more on how to receive weather data over geosync. satellites.
    But. Exactly. Sometimes for me I find satellites with wild feeds with transponders that are only active for events. Or new ones are activated for them.
    Leaving the sat. largely dead most of the time. But there may be strong data or multicast channels that scan and show and stay active.
    I keep them for signal finding when I'm not sure of the actual active transponder in the satellites.xml list of transponders.
    Makes for easy dish signal peaking before blindscanning that sat.

    After Over 50 flashes to my Dreambox and working out how to back up my hard work I eventually got my BBC channels back. It didn't last for though . I couldn't work out why one minute BBC was found and the next minute they were not. On a boot up I got no tuner found. After a few reboots the tuner was up and running. So in a nutshell my tuner was on its way out all the time. I was unlucky that the sd channels still worked for a while. Hence why I flashed the box so many times, thinking I was pressing the wrong buttons after losing BBC on search. Weird how you lose the HD channels but keep the SD channels Thank you for all your replies. I have learnt a lot from this.
